Coming to the US on DVD from Shiny Object
"Praying Mantis," a romantic fantasy with dark undercurrents and science
fiction elements from Belgian director Marc Levie, who also served as producer.
Starring:
Lou Broclain (appeared in the French police TV series P.J.:
Police Judiciaire known internationally as C.I.D.)
Yann Chely (Le Temps Retrouve aka. Time Regained with
Catherine Deneuve and John Malkovich)
Sacha Kollich ("Harrison's Flowers" which starred Andie MacDowell)
Praying Mantis concerns the story of Sylvia (Lou Broclain), a woman
with mysterious roots who has fallen in love with Julien (Yann Chely)
following their sudden meeting on a country roadside. During their first
summer together, Sylvia realizes that the instinct of a praying mantis is
growing within her, and with that revelation comes the requisite compulsion
to kill her mate. Due to her deep feelings for Julien, she concludes she
must seek a lover to fulfill this increasing biological need. Enter
Patrick (Sacha Kollich), a womanizing daredevil with whom Sylvia begins an
affair. Originating as a torrid liaison, it rapidly turns dangerous and
deadly as Sylvia closes in on her intended victim. Sexy, engrossing and
surreal, Praying Mantis takes the literary tradition of the "man,
woman, lover" triangle and transforms it into a unique and fascinating
fable concerning life, love and death. Shot on 35mm, Praying Mantis
features stunning cinematography, lush locations and a stirring soundtrack.
The film recently completed a theatrical run in Belgium. The film is in
French and will be presented with English subtitles.
